The European Union (EU) is one of the major donors to the Republic of Kiribati. Cooperation between European Union and the Republic of Kiribati dates back to 1975. During this period the EU has provided the Republic of Kiribati with a total of approximately EUR50 million for national projects most of which are devolved to development of infrastructure on the outer islands.

There are 4 national projects currently being implemented in Kiribati and include: (i) Improvement of Health Services on the Outer Islands; (ii) Environmentally Safe Aggregates for Tarawa (ESAT); (iii) Technical Cooperation Facility (TCF); and (iv) Solar Energy Project on the Outer Islands. The latest project which is Solar on Outer Islands was signed between the EU and Government of Kiribati for Euro4.1 million on 23rd March, 2010.
